Bomb disposal hero was seen on TV
THE “unflappable” bravery of a bomb disposal expert killed in Afghanistan this week was witnessed last month by millions of TV viewers.
Captain Daniel Shepherd, 28, from Lincoln, died on Monday as he tried to defuse a roadside bomb.
But last month ITV News filmed him as he calmly walked alone to disable a bomb by a bridge – one of 50 he dealt with in Afghanistan as a member of the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group.
Capt Shepherd made the long and lonely walk armed with a metal detector to spot any bombs.
In an interview he told how he and his men were involved in a battle of wits with the Taliban.
He said: “They’re extremely clever. They have got some very good intelligence on the way we conduct business.”
Meanwhile hundreds of mourners attended the funeral yesterday of one the youngest soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
Private Robert Laws, of Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, was just 18 when he was killed by a grenade hitting his vehicle.
