Big fall in drink and drive cases
THE number of motorists caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs has dropped by almost a quarter, new figures revealed yesterday.
An annual summer police crackdown saw 267 arrests, compared with 343 last year.
Police chiefs welcomed the figures but warned they were “no cause for celebration”.
A female learner driver and her supervisor both tested positive for drugs after their car was in a crash in Grampian.
A 36-year-old woman in Strathclyde who has been banned from driving for life five times was also caught .
Chief Superintendent Brian Anderson, of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said: “I am encouraged by these figures as any reduction is welcome.
"They are no cause for celebration, however, as once again we are seeing hundreds of drivers put themselves and others at risk by driving under the influence .”
