Holiday Scot in pool tragedy
A YOUNG holidaymaker died in a hotel swimming pool just two days after arriving on a Greek island with his wife.
Ryan Bain, 31, went for a swim to cool off in the soaring temperatures on Zante, in the Ionian Sea, on Monday but got into difficulties.
Ryan and his wife Natalie, 29, from Hamilton, Lanarkshire, flew in to the resort, a long-time favourite with Scots holidaymakers who can fly direct to the island from Scotland, last Saturday.
His parents, Willie and Ann Bain, and their daughter Erin, 24, were mourning Ryan yesterday and too upset to speak about the tragedy, but a neighbour in the Hillhouse area of Hamilton, said: “Ryan was at his mum’s house last week, just before he and Natalie went on holiday to Zante.
“He had only just arrived in the resort and had gone for a swim because of the heat.”
A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed Ryan’s death and said that, although details are sketchy, the tragedy involved a swimming pool.
Ryan, who worked for a construction company in East Kilbride, was a talented footballer as a youngster, but his hopes of a career as a professional footballer were dashed when he lost an eye after a street attack.
Earlier this month, police said they would reopen their investigations into the unlawful killing of a 17-year-old youth on Zante last July.
Matt Cryer, 17, from Sheffield, died from head injuries after he was dragged from a Zante nightclub by bouncers, punched and thrown down steep metal stairs. No one was arrested over the incident.
