Boris Johnson at risk of being 'thrown overboard' says expert
Boris Johnson won the Conservative Party leadership contest on Tuesday afternoon fuelling a discussion around how exactly the former Foreign Minister will deliver Brexit. During the Tory leadership contest, Mr Johnson repeatedly insisted the UK would be leaving the EU by October 31 “do or die”. However, political journalist Fraser Nelson warned the Tory Party would “throw Boris overboard” if he failed to take the UK out on time.
He added the Tory Party would have to quickly find a replacement or face perishing at the hands of Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party.
The Brexit Party was able to steal votes from traditional Tory voters in the European elections and Conservative MPs including Iain Duncan Smith has admitted this remains a fear for future elections.
Mr Nelson told Channel 4: “If Boris wimps out of doing what he has told everybody he will do for the last few weeks, his credibility will be shot.
“The Tories would throw him overboard without a second thought I’m afraid to say.”

“I think it is all well for him to come in with the bluster and the hubris saying let’s just man up and be much more optimistic about Brexit. It is not that easy.
“The facts haven’t changed, the maths in Parliament hasn’t changed, the EU’s position hasn’t changed, the Irish backstop situation hasn’t changed.
“So I don’t see how he can navigate that without actually just taking us out on no deal.”
Mr Johnson secured 92,153 votes - 66.4 percent - to defeat Mr Hunt, who was backed by 46,656 Tory members.
Mrs May, who will resign on Wednesday after a final session of Prime Minister's Questions, offered her congratulations to Mr Johnson.
She wrote on Twitter: “Many congratulations to @BorisJohnson on being elected leader of @Conservatives - we now need to work together to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole UK and to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of government. You will have my full support from the back benches.”
Michel Barnier, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, said Brussels looked forward to "working constructively" on ratifying the withdrawal agreement - the deal which Mr Johnson has already declared dead.
