May's in SERIOUS TROUBLE! Brexiteer MP proposes leadership change over Chequers 'let down'
BREXITEER MP Nadine Dorries has suggested the Tories need a leadership change to select a more "invigorating" Prime Minister to deliver Brexit as she warned Theresa May is now "in serious trouble" because her Chequers deal "let down".
Nadine Dorries: Theresa May has 'let me down' over Brexit
Ms Dorries admitted she was happy about Theresa May becoming Prime Minister but has since changed her mind because of her Brexit strategy.
The Tory MP warned Mrs May she is now "in serious trouble" because of her Chequers blueprint to leave the European Union, suggesting the Conservative Party needs a change of leadership to lead the country toward a "good, positive Brexit."
Speaking on Peston on Wednesday evening, Ms Dorries said: "I think she is in serious trouble.
"My personal belief is that we need somebody who can invigorate the party and articulate the sunny uplands, who can tell us all about the great opportunities that are going to be there if we have a good, positive Brexit. Theresa May is not doing that and that is a problem."
The Prime Minister has been facing renewed pressure from Brexit hard liners within her party after she announced she would continue to back the Chequers deal despite Brussels summarily dismissing her white paper.
The Brexit blueprint includes proposals for the creation a free trade area regulated through a common rulebook – a plan Brexiteers have denounced as a betrayal of the demands of Leave voters during the 2016 EU referendum.
Ms Dorries continued: "I say it in sorrow because I was delighted when Theresa May was Prime Minister and I’ve been saying for many, many months to people ‘trust her, she will deliver.’
"Sadly, she has let me down and has let other people down because she isn’t delivering.
My personal belief is that we need somebody who can invigorate the party
"The reason why she is’t delivering is because she has handcuffed herself to this Chequers deal."
But Ms Dorries insisted there was still a way for Mrs May to hold on to her seat at Number 10: "There is a chance for Theresa May.
"What she needs is a ladder to climb down from Chequers and embrace a Canada plus, free trade agreement and that’s what she needs to do and that’s the only thing that can save her."
Ministers are concerned at Mrs May’s vow to take the UK out of the bloc on March 29 without a deal if her Chequers proposals, which European Council President Donald Tusk told last week’s Salzburg summit “will not work”, are rejected once again another summit scheduled for October 18.
Alastair Campbell and Nadine Dorries have fiery row over Brexit
Big hitters including Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Sajid Javid are said to have grave misgivings about her uncompromising approach.
They would like her to back a Canada-style free trade deal which would enable mostly tariff-free trade in goods with the EU - although more restrictions on the movement of services.
One source told The Times: “We don’t want a no-deal and lots of people think her tactic means we can get there by accident.
“We think that a Canada deal is better than no deal.”
