In the television interview, released on November 17, 2010, the beaming couple acted coy and shy in front of the camera.
The couple told ITN’s political editor, Tom Bradbury, about their days attending university together and the first time they “laid eyes on each other”.
But in a rare insight, the Duchess of Cambridge retold the particularly awkward moment when she broke the news of her engagement to her mother, Carole Middleton, before the public announcement.
When Mr Bradbury asked how the couple revealed their engagement to Kate’s parents, the Duke frankly told how he feared Kate's father, Michael Middleton, would deny him her hand in marriage.
The Duke of Cambridge said: “I was torn between asking Kate’s dad first and then the realisation that he might actually say no.
“So I thought if I asked Kate first, then he really can’t say no. So, I went about it in that way.
"I managed to speak to Mike soon after it happened really and then it happened from there.”
When Mr Bradbury asked how the Duchess’ mother Carole reacted, she told the broadcaster: “I think as any mother would be, she was absolutely over the moon.
Kate said: “Actually, we had quite an awkward situation, because I knew and I knew that William had asked my father.
“So I came back from Scotland and my mother didn’t make it clear to me about whether she knew about it or not.
“So both of us were there looking at each other and feeling quite awkward about it. But it was amazing to tell her and she is very happy for us.”

The Duke of Cambridge candidly told the programme: “We lived with a couple of others as well and it sort of blossomed from there.
"We saw a lot of each other and hung out a bit more and...”
The Duchess then cut William off and jokingly asked: “Did you like my cooking?”, to which the Duke cheekily quipped back: “Your cooking was alright – it’s got better.”
