DAWN OF ROBOT DOMINATION: AI on brink of becoming MORE INTELLIGENT than humans
ROBOTS are on the brink of becoming the dominant species on Earth, experts fear as artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more intelligent than humans.
Artificial Intelligence: "The last invention" we'll need
While the rise of AI now seems inevitable, scientists’ understanding of it is not yet complete, and some believe the machines are now learning too fast to be controlled.
The quest for highly evolved AI has been met with both excitement and skepticism with some believing that computer programming can only benefit us.
Others, however, including Stephen Hawking, believe the development of AI which is more powerful than the human brain could lead to humanity’s demise.
AI on brink of becoming MORE INTELLIGENT than humans
Robots could become the dominant species on Earth
The pinnacle of AI is a development called ‘deep learning’, which is where machines learn for themselves and essentially can improve themselves through this manner.
Earlier this year, Microsoft and Cambridge University teamed up to create AI software which has the ability to write code for itself.
Deep learning is the attempt to mimic the human brain
The sophisticated machine known as DeepCoder has the ability to solve its programming problems by stealing codes from other programs.
Speaking to MIT Technology Review, Professor Tommi Jaakkola, who works on deep learning, said the complexity of deep learning is already too much for humans to comprehend.
He said: “If you had a very small neural network, you might be able to understand it.
“But once it becomes very large, and it has thousands of units per layer and maybe hundreds of layers, then it becomes quite un-understandable.”
Could AI takeover the world?
The news follows from a sensational claim from Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees warning that there will be an uprising of robots which could lead to humanity’s downfall.
The 74-year old predicted the end for humans, stating that "within a few centuries machines will have taken over”.
