'I tried Princess Kate's simple six-ingredient smoothie and it looked like pondwater'

Despite the murky green appearance, I knew Princess Kate's go-to smoothie recipe would be nutritious and delicious.

The Princess of Wales has reportedly been sipping a "royally approved" green smoothie packed full of vitamins and nutrients every morning with her breakfast - and her favourite healthy drink contains six simple ingredients.

Health experts have spilled the beans (and kale) revealing that this gene elixir might be part of Princess Kate's daily routine.

The nutrition experts BarBend said: "The Princess [may] blend her own antioxidant-filled smoothies, mixing kale, spirulina, matcha, spinach, romaine, and blueberries together in a delicious mix, helping her maintain a natural glow and healthy skin."

The recipe is simple, yet it contains some surprising ingredients that you will be able to find in a supermarket or health shop.

The smoothie ingredients are as follows:

Kale
Spinach
Romaine lettuce
Blueberries
Spirulina powder (a pinch)
Matcha powder (small teaspoon)

When making the smoothie, I found it was best to chop up the ingredients and add the quantities depending on your own personal preferences.

I prefer having sweet smoothies with lots of fruit, so I must admit I was tentative about the heavy combination of vegetables in the drink.

I rough-chopped the kale, spinach and lettuce and also decided to put an extra handful of blueberries in the smoothie blender for added sweetness.

After a quick blitz, I added a pinch of spirulina and matcha powder, blitzed again, and poured the contents into a glass. It was really that simple.

If the consistency is too thick, you can add water or yoghurt to the smoothie and blend again, depending on your personal preference.

For those unfamiliar with spirulina, it is a blue-green algae that's packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and protein. It has a long history as a superfood. Health websites advise it may help manage inflammation, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels too.

Matcha powder is finely grounded and made from Japanese green tea leaves. It is high in antioxidants and vitamins and commonly used in Japan to make matcha tea, but is also used in baking and cooking.

Many other food enthusiasts who tried the same smoothie and shared their recipes commented the final result of the smoothie looked like pondwater - and I wholeheartedly agree.

I first tried the drink and found it to be extremely fibrous, and therefore ended up straining the mixture which finally formulated a thick, smooth, powerful, but punchy smoothie.

For those who are not too keen on vegetable smoothies because of the intense flavours, I would recommend making a small amount of the smoothie and having it as a 'vitamin shot' every morning, for a healthy boost to your diet.

Previously describing the smoothie, former royal nutritionist Jennifer Hanway told HELLO! Magazine: "Kate has a ton of antioxidants in there, a ton of vitamins and minerals, and a ton of fibre – which make for a powerhouse of overall health.

"Everything from the kale to the leafy greens is a really great source of nutrients. I would blend in some great quality protein and some healthy fats as well, which would round that smoothie into a really great balanced breakfast."

If you thought being a princess was all about caviar and champagne, think again! After following the recipe I believe Kate’s choice to sip on this veggie smoothie is a testament to how down-to-earth she really is.
