Mike Tindall once threw punches at Prince Harry as a prank to see how good his security was - and it turned out to be pretty good.

The ex-rugby union star is married to Princess Anne's daughter, Zara Tindall, and has been joining the royal at major events as well as less formal, family gatherings.

And it was during one of these less formal, family gatherings, all the way back in 2003, that the incident took place.

Mike enjoyed a night out with the Duke of Sussex and former teammate Iain Balshaw during the Rugby World Cup in Australia.

According to Zara Tindall's husband, the rugby stars wanted to test how good the prince's security really was and threw punches at him.

But it turned out that Prince Harry’s bodyguards were very alert, as it was only a matter of seconds before the rugby players were held back.

Mike made the comments during A Question of Sport Live at the London Palladium in September 2021.

He also joked that there are now other royals who would like to do the same to the duke.

Tindall said: "At Balmoral, the family are now having the same conversation."

He added: "Except the Queen has taken his security away."

The Sussexes and the Tindalls once used to have a close relationship but ever since Harry and Meghan's sensational departure from the Firm in 2020, things have become quite "frosty".

That frostiness was more than evident during the Platinum Jubilee, when, after a service at St Paul’s Cathedral, Mike barely made any contact with the Sussex camp, opting to speak to someone else instead.
