THE House of Lords is to lose one of its most colourful characters as Baroness Trumpington announced her retirement.

The Second World War code breaker turned Tory politician became an internet sensation when she jokingly flicked a V-sign at a fellow peer in 2009, aged 89.
Lord King of Bridgwater, himself then 78, had indirectly described her as being old in a speech about the passing of the war generation.

Viewers of footage posted online dubbed the life peer a “heroine”.
“Trumpers” went on to appear on TV shows, including Have I Got News For You and penned an autobiography detailing her extraordinary life.
She served as a code breaker at Bletchley Park, became Mayor of Cambridge then an agriculture minister.

She has told parliamentary authorities she will quit the Lords in October, close to her 95th birthday.
Lord King, hailed her “wonderful career”, adding her gesture had done “wonders for my recognition factor among taxi drivers!”
Leader of the House Baroness Evans of Bowes Park said: “Peers from all sides of the House will miss Baroness Trumpington’s kindness, infectious sense of fun and good humour.”
