LABOUR’S Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said Theresa May must rethink her position on forthcoming European Union divorce talks in the wake of the shock election result.

Sir Keir, who almost doubled his majority to more than 30,000 in Holborn and St Pancras, said the British public had rejected the Prime Minister’s "extreme form of Brexit”.

He said: ”The Prime Minister called this election because she wanted to force through an extreme version of Brexit.
"She wanted to do it without any scrutiny or challenge.
"The people of Britain have rejected her approach.
"It's clear already she had failed in that endeavour, which is to do with the energy, commitment, and positivity of the campaign Labour has run.
"It's early days but there is a glimmer of hope."

As Shadow Brexit Secretary, Sir Keir would be in line to take control of negotiations for leaving the EU if Labour seize power.
He praised the “very positive” campaign run by Jeremy Corbyn.

He said: “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved.
“What is clear is that Theresa May ran a very, very bad campaign – but it’s equally clear that Jeremy Corbyn ran a very positive campaign, with a positive manifesto. We went out there and we took it across the country.
“That is a large part of why we’ve got the results we’ve seen today.”
