There is speculation the MEP will stand in the Greater Manchester seat of Leigh, where fellow Merseysider Andy Burnham stood down as Labour MP this week ahead of his expected election on May 4 as regional mayor.

Mr Nuttall failed in February to beat Labour in the Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election.
At an election campaign event on Monday this week, he repeatedly refused to say if he would be a candidate in this election.
