Cut migration to 1950s levels, says Nigel Farage
NIGEL Farage yesterday called for net migration to be slashed to around 30,000 newcomers a year to bring Britain back to “normality”.
UKIP want to quit the EU and introduce a new system to cut immigration
The UK Independence Party leader said quitting the EU and introducing a points-based system could bring immigration down to levels seen from 1950, before a mass influx from Eastern Europe.
He attacked David Cameron for claiming he would cut net migration to less than 100,000 a year. Mr Farage made his comments near Dover as he unveiled a Ukip General Election poster, above, featuring escalators rising up its white cliffs.
He said: “When Cameron made that promise he was being wilfully dishonest because he knew the truth – that you actually cannot have an immigration policy, you can’t set targets of any kind at all...while you’re members of EU.”
Asked what annual levels he would like, he said: “A return to normality, a return to about a net 30,000 people... what we had for 50 years from 1950.”
But Charlie Elphicke, Tory MP for Dover, said anyone voting for Ukip risked a Labour victory and “no action on immigration”
