Donald Trump has taken another astonishing veiled swipe at Sir Keir Starmer as the UK-US 'special relationship' teeters on the edge. Taking to social media platfrom Truth Social, the US president used the opportunity to once again seemingly attack the UK for what he sees as a lack of action in the Iran war.

Mr Trump said some countries have "shown their true colors" in moments of "conflict and stress", whereas Israel has proven to be an exceptionally strong and dependable ally of the US. He added that "unlike others", Israel is "Courageous, Bold, Loyal, and Smart". He concluded that Israel "knows how to win".

Mr Trump's full post read: "Whether people like Israel or not, they have proven to be a GREAT Ally of the United States of America.

"They are Courageous, Bold, Loyal, and Smart and, unlike others that have shown their true colors in a moment of conflict and stress, Israel fights hard, and knows how to WIN!"

US–UK relations have been on the rocks ever since Britain refused to be drawn into the Iran conflict, particularly following the American blockade of the Strait of Hormuz - something that has infuriated Donald Trump.

Last month, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK would not be drawn into the "wider war", something Mr Trump said he was "very surprised at".

Renewing his criticism, Mr Trump said he believed the UK would be involved with helping in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, adding: "They should be involved enthusiastically."

Earlier this week, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth took a brutal shot at the Royal Navy for not helping in its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

In response to a question about any allies "stepping up" to "phase-out" US military escorts of commercial ships through the Strait, Mr Hegseth replied: "There's a lot of talk in what we've seen in this conflict from allies. Some allies have talked a lot and not done anything."

The latest dig at Sir Keir came after Mr Trump appeared to mimic him in a hesitant, subdued voice during an Easter lunch speech at the White House earlier this month.

The president claimed he had asked the UK to deploy its two aircraft carriers in support of US operations, but said the Prime Minister replied that he would need to consult his team first.

Recounting the exchange, he told guests: "I said: 'You have two, old broken-down aircraft carriers. Do you think you could send them over?' 'Ohhh, I’ll have to ask my team.'

"I said 'You’re the Prime Minister, you don’t have to.' 'No, no, no, I have to ask my team. My team has to meet, we’re meeting next week.' But the war already started. Next week the war’s going to be over … in three days."
