Sir Keir Starmer's cut to winter fuel payments will go ahead after a Tory bid to reverse it was defeated in the Commons.

The Prime Minister saw off a backbench rebellion with MPs voting 348 to 228 against a Conservative motion for the controversial measure to be blocked, although his majority was reduced to 120.

Shouts of "shame" could be heard in the chamber as the result of the vote was announced.

One Labour backbencher, Jon Trickett, opposed the Government in supporting the Tory motion, while 53 including seven ministers had no vote recorded.

Having no vote recorded does not necessarily mean that an MP actively chose to abstain - for example, some may be unable to attend due to other commitments.

As well as the ministers, it is understood some on the list had been "slipped", meaning they were given permission not to attend.

The Labour Government has come under intense pressure over the plan to restrict winter fuel payments to all but the country's poorest pensioners.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Mel Stride accused Sir Keir of "broken promises already" during the rowdy debate this afternoon.

He also took aim at Labour for prioritising public sector pay rises "on the backs of vulnerable pensioners"

But Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall accused the Conservatives of "faux outrage" over the winter fuel payment.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the squeeze in July as part of a series of measures aimed at filling a £22 billion black hole in the public finances which she claimed was left by the Tories.

Under the plans, the payments of up to £300 a year will be limited to only those claiming pension credit or other means-tested benefits.

It is expected to reduce the number of pensioners in receipt of the allowance from 11.4 million to 1.5 million, saving around £1.4 billion this year.
