Army bomb squad units and police rushed to Tory MP Jeremy Quin's office in Horsham after a suspect device was discovered.

Sussex Police, fire and rescue were at the scene with fire engines and a bomb disposal vehicle.

The package is believed to have been delivered to the Conservative Association in Gough House, Horsham yesterday.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed they were called about a suspicious package in the early afternoon on June 13.

They said: "We received a report of a suspicious package at a premises in Madeira Avenue, Horsham, at about 2.40pm this afternoon.

"Police and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team are currently at the scene."

They added: "If anyone in the area has concerns, they can speak to an officer at the scene, or call 101. Further updates will be provided in due course."

Mr Quin reassured there was "no cause for alarm" as he noted in a statement his office had immediately contacted the police after spotting the package.

He said: "After the receipt of a suspicious parcel at my Horsham office earlier today the police decided that the incident should be escalated and specialists from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team were called in.

"It is still under investigation but there is no cause for alarm and the incident is being thoroughly and professionally addressed."

The Horsham MP insisted he felt fortunate to serve his constituents but reiterated the importance of taking potential threats seriously.

Mr Quin also thanked emergency services for their immediate response.

He added: "It’s a huge privilege to engage in public service but sadly in the world in which we live incidents of this nature always have to be taken seriously.

"I am very grateful to the emergency services for their prompt actions and continuing work to ensure public safety."
