THE five-days Brexit debate has official started in the House of Commons. Here’s how to watch MPs debate Brexit live online.
Brexit: Theresa May gives statement to open deal debate
Theresa May is continuing the battle to save her EU Withdrawal Agreement. In a crunch vote on Tuesday, December 11, MPs will vote on whether they agree on the terms on which the UK will leave the EU and the desired future relationship. But first, MPs will debate the deal in the Commons.
Since the debate started Mrs May has lost a vote on an amendment tabled by Tory rebel Dominic Greive.
Approved by 321 votes to 299, the motion will allow MPs to vote on amendments to the EU Withdrawal Agreement if it is defeated in next week’s meaningful vote.
If the prime minister loses her crucial Brexit vote on Tuesday, the Government will have 21 days to outline to the Commons what will happen next.
In addition, the prime minister also suffered a defeat not seen in Parliament for years, as her Government was found guilty in contempt of Parliament by failing to release the full Brexit legal advice.
MPs voted 311 to 293, meaning the legal document will have to be released with “immediate publication.”
Tory MP Andrea Leadsom has confirmed the document will be released on Wednesday, December 5.
Mrs May’s Government also lost a third vote in the Commons today.
The vote surrounded the Government’s petition to refer the Brexit legal advice to be referred to the Commons Privilege Committee.
