Theresa May to QUIT? Who will replace Theresa May - who will be next Prime Minister?
THERESA MAY has faced massive backlash after she presented the EU Withdrawal Agreement last week. Will Theresa May quit and who will replace her as prime minister?
Graham Brady says he still supports Theresa May
Theresa May is fighting to keep her party together after her suggested Brexit deal led to multiple senior ministers, including Esther McVey and Dominic Raab, handing in their letters of resignation. Since the draft was presented a number of Tories have also handed in a letter of no confidence in Mrs May, including the chair of the 1922 Committee is Jacob Rees-Mogg, a move that could eventually lead to a Conservative party leadership challenge. At least 25 other MPs, including Peter Bone, Philip Davies, Andrea Jenkyns, Nadine Dorries, Andrew Bridgen and Simon Clarke, have also submitted no confidence letters.
Who could replace Theresa May as Prime Minister?
Boris Johnson served as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs until July 2018.
He is also the former Mayor of London and is one of the most Brexit-backing Tories.
Johnson previously bottled a leadership run in the wake of the Brexit referendum when Michael Gove pulled out his support, saying he had “come, reluctantly, to the conclusion that Boris cannot provide the leadership or build the team for the task ahead”.
Dominic Raab
One of the favourite candidates to replace Theresa May if a leadership challenge is triggered is Dominic Raab, Mrs May’s newly-resigned Brexit secretary.
Mr Raab served as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union from July 2018 to November 2018.
The 44-year-old has proven a good negotiator, by demanding the UK have the right to unilaterally end the Northern Ireland backstop arrangement.
Mr Raab has also served as Minister of Housing and Minister of Justice before being promoted but has long been regarded as capable of high office.
However, the former Brexit secretary refused to be drawn on whether he would stand in a future battle if Mrs May potentially have to stand aside.
And the MP for Esher and Walton has said he is not among those submitting a letter into the 1922 committee.
Mr Raab told BBC: “I’m supportive of the prime minister, I’m not going to be supporting anyone that is sending in letters to the 1922 committee. In a vote of no confidence, I would support her.”
Jeremy Hunt is the remainer hope for their future UK prime minister.
Before becoming Foreign Secretary he was the longest serving Health Secretary in UK history.
But despite raising the profile of the Foreign Office since Boris Johnson’s departure, his support for remain in 2016 may be held against him as its highly unlikely Brexiteers will vote for Mr Hunt.
Other potential replacements for Theresa May include:
- Sajid David
- Penny Mordant
- Michael Gove
- David Davis
- Amber Rudd
- Jacob Rees-Mogg
- Justine Greening
- Esther McVey
