On this day in 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon
1951: Robin Williams born
The actor Robin Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois and went on to star in a series of beloved films, including Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society and Aladdin.
1954: End of Indochina War
The First Indochina War, fought between France and Vietnamese forces, ended after seven years.
A peace treaty, dubbed the Geneva Accords, was signed at the Geneva Conference.
1956: Althea Gibson wins French Open
Althea Gibson became the first black tennis player to win a Grand Slam title when she lifted the French Open.
She beat Britain's Angela Mortimer 6-10 12-10 in the final in Paris.
1969: Man walks on the Moon
Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon, followed by Buzz Aldrin.
He famously declared: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
1994: Blair takes over Labour
Tony Blair replaced John Smith as Labour leader, leading the party to three successive General Election victories in 1997, 2001 and 2005.
2005: Failed London bombings
Two weeks after the horror of 7/7, four bombs were planted on London's transport network – but none of the devices exploded.
The four attempted bombers were jailed in 2007.
