Netflix increases price for UK customers for second time in almost a year
NETFLIX has bumped up the price of its HD streaming plan for UK customers for a second time.
Netflix previously bumped up the cost of streaming for UK customers in May 2014
Netflix has increased the monthly subscription cost of its basic HD plan in the UK – almost one year since its last price bump.
The hugely successful streaming firm increased its Standard plan, which bundles HD content and the ability to watch on two screens simultaneously, from £5.99 to £6.99 in May last year.
Subscribers are reportedly being notified about the change in price via email
Netflix has this morning quietly increased the price again – from £6.99 to £7.49.
The firm recently unveiled a new look for customers streaming using their internet browser.
The Netflix Premium plan (which offers Ultra HD 4K streaming on select shows and four simultaneous devices) has remained at £8.99 and the Basic package (which has no HD and limits you to one screen-at-a-time viewing) has also kept its £5.99 pricing.
Subscribers are reportedly being notified about the change in price via email. However, Netflix claims the 50p price bump will only apply to new customers.
The updated UK pricing tiers, which are now live on the Netflix website
In the email, Netflix writes: "In order to continue adding more TV programmes and films, including great Netflix series such as House of Cards and Better Call Saul, we are increasing our price for new members from £6.99 to £7.49 for the 2 screens at a time plan.
"As a thank you for being a member of Netflix already, your current pricing will remain in effect and we guarantee your price will not change until May 2016."
When the US streaming giant changed its plans in May 2014, it offered existing customers a two-year price freeze at £5.99 per month, before being moved up to the new tier.
Netflix has become synonymous with online streaming after a string of hit exclusive shows, including the Kevin Spacey-led House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Daredevil and Tina Fey's first sitcom since 30 Rock, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
