The closest thing to teleportation: Tesla founder reveals Hyperloop high speed travel plan
AN inventor has unveiled plans for a near-supersonic transportation service which he says is the only option for high speed travel 'short of figuring out real teleportation'.
Elon Musk, entrepreneur and founder of electric car giant Tesla, has outlined his vision for the high-speed tube service Hyperloop which is capable of travelling around 700mph this evening.
The transport system, which is designed to be self-powering, uses magnets and powerful fans to shoot capsules on a cushion of air in a long tube.
The system is intended to link San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Mr Musk says the system could travel the 380 mile journey in half an hour.
A paper outlining the Hyperloop proposal says: "Short of figuring out real teleportation, which would of course be awesome (someone please do this), the only option for super fast travel is to build a tube over or under the ground that contains a special environment."
Mr Musk has previously said the Hyperloop system would be incapable of crashing and would be immune to adverse weather conditions.
However, he said he is too focused on other projects to consider building it and has invited other inventors to submit ideas for ways to improve it.
Mr Musk said: "I think I kind of shot myself by ever mentioning the Hyperloop.
"I don't have any plans to execute, because I must remain focused on SpaceX and Tesla."
The publication of the Hyperloop plans are open sourced, meaning that anyone can use it and modify it.
Mr Musk has a strong track record since selling his first computer program, a £323 space game called Blastar when aged 12.
The billionaire has co-founded online payment firm PayPal, electric carmaker Tesla and rocket building-company SpaceX.
