Parts of the web have stopped working, with 17 sites having crashed, as Cloudflare suffers technical glitches. Several high-profile websites, including Spotify, X, ChatGPT and Vinted, have been taken down as thousands of users report problems.

Outage monitoring site Downdetector had more than 7,000 reports raised by noon this afternoon. Cloudflare said in a statement it had seen "a spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare's services beginning at 11:20", which had caused errors for traffic passing through its network. The company says it's "investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers".

On its homepage, X is displaying a message for some users saying there is a problem with its internal server, as a result of an "error" originating with Cloudflare.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s page shows an error that is recurring across affected sites: “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed.”

Spotify users reported that they could not open the app, whilst the following error message reads on Bet365: “Sorry, you have been blocked. You are unable to access bet365.com.” It is accompanied by a host of worrying messages about you potentially being a security threat.

Cloudflare’s most recent statement at the time of publication read: “We are continuing to work on a fix for this issue”.

Cloudflare is one of the biggest networks on the Internet. People use Cloudflare for web application security and performance.

The internet infrastructure firm includes tools that protect websites from cyber attacks and ensure that they stay online amid heavy traffic.

It says 20% of all websites worldwide use its services in some form. It is currently unclear how many of those websites have been affected by this outage, and to what extent.

Internet users have been taking to Reddit to voice concerns over the impact the outage could have on areas like their work and online banking.

One wrote: "My bank uses Cloudflare on their app. Until this is fixed, I'm completely unable to check my balance or use the app."

Another said: "Nothing like waking up in the morning to texts from clients that their sites are down."
