Airpods have become like Sellotape and Hoover - if you want to refer to wireless earbuds, many people just say ‘AirPods’. Apple’s famous white earphones adorn the ears of many, but they are also quite pricey, which is why it’s worth taking the plunge when the gadget is on sale. Though Argos is currently selling AirPods for under £100, is now the best time to take the plunge?

Argos has the second-generation AirPods on sale for a solid £99. Apple currently sells them for £129, so the £30 saving dips the price under £100. This model is the updated version of the original AirPods that first came out in 2016 - the first version cost £159.
This second-gen version has Hey Siri functionality but otherwise is the most simple set of AirPods you can buy. The case charges via Lightning cable, and the fully charged buds should last for five hours of continuous audio before you need to pop them back in the case for a top up.
AirPods for £99 is always a good deal, and this is the cheapest you’re going to find them selling for time soon so if you have been on the fence this deal is well worth it.
But on 9th September, Apple is holding an event where it is widely believed (though unconfirmed) to be announcing the iPhone 16 range. There are also strong rumours that Apple will unveil two new sets of AirPods, including entry level buds that will replace the second-gen AirPods, which came out in 2019.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reckons these new AirPods could look more like the third-gen AirPods that Apple, confusingly, also still sells. These earphones came out in 2021 and are sold alongside the second-gen version. They have an option for a MagSafe charging case, and have support for Spatial Audio as well as being sweat and water resistant.
It’s thought a cheaper pair will be released, with a second new pair gaining active noise cancellation and some other features, but neither of these new AirPods will be AirPods Pro branded.
If it’s the cheapest AirPods you’re after then the ones Argos has on sale are the least you’ll pay by some margin. But if you would prefer the latest tech at the best possible price, Apple might announce something better in a matter of days. There are no pricing rumours yet, but the current third-gen AirPods start from £169. If your budget stretches to that, you might want to wait and see if you can afford the newest of the new.
Apple may not announce new AirPods though, as this is all rumour. If you want cheap AirPods, this Argos £99 deal is the way to go.
