The iPhone 16 range is now finally official with Apple announcing the launch of four new call makers including standard and Pro models. These all-new devices won't arrive in the UK until later next week but I've been lucky enough to get my hands on them at Apple's HQ in Cupertino and there are plenty of reasons to consider taking the plunge and making the jump. Along with all of the usual changes such as a faster A18 processor, better battery life and a refreshed look, there's also the addition of something Apple is calling Camera Control.

It's basically a button on the side of the device that instantly launches the camera once pressed. Having spent some time with the iPhone 16 I soon realised that this is more than just a simple shutter button. Swipes and taps can change the settings, zoom in on objects you are trying to shoot and easily switch to different modes or add filters to your photos.

It's instantly intuitive and takes a lot of the hassle out of snapping images for the family album - in fact, it feels like such an advantageous upgrade I've been left wondering why it's taken Apple so long to include it.

There's even more this button can do as well. Say you're passing by a restaurant and want to know more about its opening times and if the food is any good.

You simply press the Camera Control button and point the phone where you fancy eating. Smart features then take over with visual intelligence pulling up opening hours or those all-important star ratings from previous customers.

This clever function can even be used to add an event from a flyer to your calendar or quickly identify a dog by breed.

I'll need more time with the iPhone 16 to find out how well all these Camera Control features really work in the real world but on first impressions, it feels like something owners will get a lot of use out of.

Other bonus extras you're going to find on the iPhone 16 include a revamped rear snapper that now offers a 48MP Fusion camera with a 2x Telephoto option. There are also better close-ups thanks to macro photography.

Gaming is improved via that powerful A18 chip inside with owners being treated to Pro features such as ray tracing which adds a console feel to titles on the device.

The iPhone 16 range also now gets the Action Button - which was previously only available on Pro models. This addition lets you launch favourite features such as the Torch or Do Not Disturb with just one tap.

The matt-style design also looks really good again this year with some extra colours added - there's pink, teal, and ultramarine - and the inclusion of more durable Ceramic Shield glass which is 50 percent tougher than the first generation.

These devices have also been built to be ready for the upcoming Apple Intelligence upgrade which brings a whole swathe of smart functionality including help with writing emails and automatic picture editing.

Finally, there's no price rise in 2024 with the iPhone 16 range starting from £799.
