Samsung’s Galaxy Watch smartwatches have been consistently excellent for years and remain a top Android wearable choice in 2024. The latest Galaxy Watch 6 Classic brought back the fan-favourite rotating bezel, which remains a great way to navigate the Wear OS software. Now with the next Galaxy Unpacked event on the horizon, rumours are circling about the next generation of Galaxy Watch - and there could be a whole new watch line launched.

According to Greek tech site TechManiacs, Samsung will release a new smartwatch called the Galaxy Watch X. The report said the device will be “a more premium watch designed for use that requires a more robust build”, and will have diving features and a price that will put it in competition with the Apple Watch Ultra. The latest Apple Watch Ultra 2 currently sells for a whopping £799.

Apple revolutionised the smartwatch industry with the Apple Watch, popularising wrist computers while keeping people hooked into Apple’s ecosystem at the same time. For those who prefer Android, Samsung has done a good job of evolving its Galaxy Watch line up, but the past three generations have all been quite similar. A Galaxy Watch X that attempts to rival high-end smartwatches such as the Apple Watch Ultra suggests Samsung may put in more features akin to watches from outdoor enthusiast brands such as Garmin and Suunto.

TechManiacs claims the Galaxy Watch X will be “priced significantly higher” than other watches in the range, so it would be more expensive than the £369 Watch 6 Classic. It will reportedly last 100 hours on a charge, similar to what the OnePlus Watch 2 can reach.

A second Galaxy Watch rumour is also circulating from renowned leaker OnLeaks, who published renders of an alleged upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra (via Smartprix). The design is an evolution of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, seemingly keeping the rotating bezel but squashing the sides in to give a ‘squircle’ look to the casing.

The design looks a little odd considering its a circular face on top of a square body. There’s a third physical button added - much like the Apple Watch Ultra has three buttons instead of two on regular models - plus an updated strap design and larger speaker grilles.

MySmartPrice also reported files that suggest a Galaxy Watch Ultra is on the way, along with a (presumably cheaper) Galaxy Watch. Samsung could end up selling smartwatches at various new price points.

It’s unclear if this Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra is actually the Galaxy Watch X and some wires have been crossed somewhere. Either this is the same product and one of the names is incorrect, or they are two separate products. Or, of course, all these rumours are not on the money.

Things should be clearer soon enough. Rumour has it Samsung will stage its next Unpacked event in July, which follows as the last event that launched the Z Flip 5, Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Watch 6 series was in July 2023. Express.co.uk will be on hand to bring you the latest when it happens.
