Millions of broadband users are set for a vital speed boost over the coming months and it's what many have been waiting for. It's just been confirmed that additional homes across the country will soon get Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connections which are capable of blasting the web through walls at speeds in excess of 1Gbps.

At that rapid rate it would take just 40 seconds to download a full HD movie - that's over 10 times faster than the current UK average.

The boost is all thanks to Openreach adding over 500 new locations to its ultrafast network with the firm boasting that it means 2.7 million additional homes and businesses will finally get vastly improved speeds.

For those unaware, ageing copper lines that dangle above UK streets can only offer around 70Mbps which is far slower than new fibre technology.

Which Internet Service Providers use Openreach cables?

Some of the UK's biggest Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use Openreach technology to supply homes with broadband. Here are some of the main names that connect via this platform.

BT • Sky • TalkTalk • Plusnet • NOW Broadband • Vodafone • EE • Zen • Cuckoo

Some of the added locations for the FTTP boost include Tobermory in Scotland; Haworth in West Yorkshire; Saundersfoot in South Wales; Pinxton in Derbyshire, Harlow in Essex; Southampton in Hampshire; and Roborough in Devon.

To help people find out when they are being hooked up to improved downloads, Openreach has also refresh its online map and postcode checker.

This is aimed at giving the public a clearer, regularly updated view of its plans and progress between now and 2026.

The map now shows the levels of current and future expected Full Fibre coverage as of today, taking data from all of its major build programmes, whilst the postcode checker continues to offer the most personalised view of the connectivity available to an individual home or business.

It's hoped that by the end of 2026, 25 million homes and businesses will have access to gigabit-capable technology.

Speaking about the latest boost, Clive Selley, CEO, Openreach, said: “This is a UK infrastructure success story. We’re on track and on-budget to make this life-changing broadband technology available to 25 million homes and businesses, and no company is building faster or further in Europe, that we’re aware of.

“We won’t be stopping there either. We plan to build right across the UK, from cities and towns to far-flung farms and island communities. Ultimately, we’ll reach as many as 30 million premises by the end of the decade if there’s a supportive political and regulatory environment."
