PLANS have been submitted to convert the derelict mortuary at an old asylum into a home.

The creepy Victorian building has been boarded up since in 1987 and is one of a pair of mortuaries at the former Exeter City Asylum in Devon.
Plans to convert the first one into residential use two years ago were rejected on the grounds of unsuitable internal and external amenity.

But a developer now thinks he can turn the other into a “delightful” one-bedroom flat.
Their application says: “The building stands as a monument to the former hospital, but a lack of viable use over the last 30 years has led to damage and decay.
Exeter City Council planners are expected to decide on the plans next month
“Planning guidance promotes the conversion and reuse of historic buildings for residential accommodation.
“In this case, a small and unique dwelling could be created with relatively minor alterations to the building fabric.”
