DIY jobs such as painting walls or anything to do with interior design are often fairly straightforward.

However, experts have “unanimously” advised against tackling five certain jobs at home.

1. Fixing leaks

When money is tight, it is tempting to tackle plumbing jobs yourself to save some money.

However, fixing leaks without proper expertise can lead to more significant issues, and lead to more expense.

The experts at Diamond Interiors said: “A seemingly minor leak can escalate, causing extensive water damage to your home.

“The cost of repairing water damage, replacing parts, and paying for professional help to correct the initial mistake can far exceed the original cost of hiring a plumber.”

2. Plumbing in appliances

Installing appliances like radiators, taps and electric showers might look easy with online tutorials, but when done incorrectly, can result in leaks and water damage.

In many cases, the cost of fixing these mistakes is much higher than hiring a professional in the first instance.

3. Plumbing in bathrooms and kitchens

The experts explained: “After watching a few YouTube videos, many feel confident plumbing in a toilet or sink.

“However, these projects often fail because they need the correct tools and a thorough understanding of plumbing systems.

“Incorrect installations can lead to persistent leaks, water damage and even sewage issues, which are costly and inconvenient to repair.

“Professional plumbers have the experience and tools to make sure the job is done correctly the first time.”

4. Changing taps

Changing a tap may seem straightforward but it can quickly become a nightmare if not done correctly, with common mistakes including over-tightening fittings, using the wrong tools and not sealing threads.

These errors can lead to leaks and additional damage, according to the pros. They added: “If you spend £100 on new taps and make a mistake installing them yourself, you may need to pay an additional £110 to £130 for a professional to fix the problem, and that’s only if the issue is limited to the taps.”
