Keeping a mattress clean can be tricky as it can easily collect dirt and stains but requires more work as it is too big to wash with the rest of your bedding.

Mattresses need to be cleaned regularly to keep them hygienic and to prevent dust mites, which are microscopic creatures which can trigger allergies or make sleep more uncomfortable.

Lynsey Crombie, Britain’s most popular cleaning expert also known as the Queen of Clean, has shared that the best way to clean a mattress is with two natural cleaners.

In a Instagram post, Lynsey said: "Try this homemade stain cleaner: mix 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water with a drop of washing-up liquid, spray it directly on the stain, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse away!"

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent which can help whiten and break down stains while also being antiseptic, which means it can kill bacteria.

Washing-up liquid contains surfactants which can lift away more stubborn stains such as sweat or grime and make it easier to remove dirt.

This simple remedy will help get stains out of your mattress, but you can also keep a mattress clean without any fuss by simply placing your mattress near the window.

Lynsey said: "Don’t forget to let your mattress air fully and bask it in natural sunlight – UV rays can disinfect and kill mould and bacteria."

Placing your mattress in the sun will remove any musty odours but will also help kill any bacteria to prevent dust mites.

Sunlight is also a natural bleaching agent due to its ultraviolet rays, which can naturally break down stains and lighten fabric.

All you need to do is place your mattress next to an open window on a sunny day for a couple of hours to make it feel much cleaner and fresher.

Using sunlight, hydrogen peroxide and washing-up liquid are the three effective yet natural cleaning methods, but rotating it regularly can also help to keep it clean.

Taking the time to rotate a mattress a few times a year helps prevent moisture from building up in specific areas, which will prevent mould from being able to grow.

It also evenly distributes dust, pollen or any other dirt to the mattress which will reduce allergens and also make it easier to clean in the future.

Flipping over a mattress will also stop it from sagging as you will be rotating your body weight on the mattress to help it maintain its structural integrity.

Lynsey said: "Do you rotate or flip your mattress? If you do this four times a year you can extend its life, help it wear evenly and distribute the filling."
