Loading your dishwasher 'properly' will save 'time and money' - experts easy tips

Loading the dishwasher is a job that is often rushed, with homeowners jamming whatever they can in any space they can find. However, incorrectly stacking your dishwasher could be wasting money and might also reduce the chances of every single item coming out sparking clean.

According to research from Hotpoint, one in 10 Brits avoid using their dishwasher completely as they have too many items they are afraid to ruin. Others simply don't know the most effective way to stack their dishwasher and make the most of the space

Dmitry Letsman, dishwasher category manager at Hotpoint shared his top tips for stacking a dishwasher. He explained: "To prevent possible mishaps, it’s important to take the time to properly load your dishwasher. This can not only ensure that your dishes come out sparkling clean and in one piece, but it can also save you time and money in the long run."

Before you get to putting dishes in the appliance, Dmitry says that it is important to scrape any excess food left over on the plate. "Before loading, make sure to scrape off excess food from plates and utensils to avoid this falling to the bottom of the machine," he said.

"Next, assess if a quick rinse of water under the tap is needed to remove any suborn stains. Only rinse if necessary – you want to try to avoid using additional water and energy, plus the hefty bill."

He then advises organising your items within the dishwasher "as this makes unloading easier and saves time". For example, stack plates with plates, bowls with bowls, etcetera.

It's important to make sure you are using the right rack for the right items. The bottom rack should be used for large items such as pots, pans and mixing bowls.

"Place them facing downwards to allow thorough cleaning and drainage," explained the expert.

When it comes to the cutlery basket, to ensure thorough cleaning, organise silverware by type to avoid overlap. "Alternate forks and spoons to prevent nesting and optimise the performance of the wash cycle," explained Dmitry.

The top rack should be used for glasses, cups and small bowls. Dmitry recommends angling the glasses and cups to allow better drainage.

If your dishwasher has a utensil holder along the sides of the top rack, you should try to use this for spatulas and serving spoons.

Throughout the appliance, it's vital you ensure stability. "Ensure that items are loaded securely and won't shift during the wash cycle, which could prevent proper cleaning or cause damage," said Dmitry.

Finally, while it may sound simple, it's important you are putting your detergent in the right place as this can vary between models. "Follow the dishwasher manufacturer's guidelines for where the detergent should be placed," said Dmitry. "Typically, detergent goes in the designated dispenser, but some models may have specific instructions so it's worth checking."
