Vet shares five popular dog breeds that 'have most expensive vet bills'
A veterinary surgeon has warned pet owners of the dog breeds that are most likely to rack up the biggest vet bills - and some of them are incredibly popular.
Some dog breeds have been tailored to look a certain way due to their immense popularity.
Yet, this trend has led to some dog breeds being more prone to health issues, which can be a financial burden for families unprepared for the high costs of care.
This is why a vet has taken to social media to alert potential dog owners about the breeds that could incur the heftiest vet bills.
Amir Anwary, known as @amirthevet on his social media platforms, has amassed a staggering 620,000 followers.
His latest viral video, which has already chalked up over 9,600 likes, lists five breeds that are likely to cost owners a pretty penny.
Goldendoodle
In fifth place is the Goldendoodle. This charming mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle is celebrated for its affable, smart, and lively disposition. However, MarketWatch research indicates that this "designer breed" is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia.
The initial year's expenses for a Goldendoodle are estimated at roughly £4,510 ($5,675), with subsequent yearly costs averaging £1,790 ($2,250). Considering the breed's average lifespan of 13 years, the total expense could reach a staggering £25,970 ($32,675).
Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog, a large, fluffy breed with a thick coat of black, white, and brown fur, came next. Known for their gentle and friendly nature, they make excellent family pets.
However, this breed has a high incidence of cancer, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia. According to Pet Insurance Quotes, cancer treatments for these dogs could cost up to £15,000 ($20,000), with treatments for dysplasia costing between £2,000 to £3,000.

American Bulldog
In third place was the American Bulldog, a robust, muscular breed with a short coat. They are incredibly loyal, protective, and love their families, making them excellent companions.
However, they are prone to health issues such as hip dysplasia, skin allergies, breathing problems and obesity. The breed typically lives from 10 to 16 years, and some of these conditions can cost thousands each year to treat.
Rottweiler
The Rottweiler took second place. Rottweilers are renowned for their loyalty, intelligence, and protective nature, often making them excellent guard dogs or working dogs. With proper training and socialisation, they can be gentle and loving pets.
However, they are susceptible to health conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia. According to Arthurs Veterinary Specialists, treatment for these conditions starts at £2,600 for each elbow procedure and £3,600 for hips.
French Bulldog
French Bulldogs topped the list of breeds with the most expensive vet bills. These small yet robust dogs have short fur, big pointy ears, a flat face, and round eyes, giving them an adorable appearance.
They are friendly, playful, and enjoy human company. However, their flat faces can lead to health issues like breathing problems and skin allergies.
Many Pets states that French Bulldogs are among the more costly breeds to insure due to their high susceptibility to health problems, making it highly likely a claim will be made during their lifetime.
