A poll, of 2,000 adults, found 62% missed out on exciting and unexpected experiences because of their hesitancy, while 51% never got the chance to meet new people. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic left 37% less spontaneous than ever, but 65% plan to have more ‘spur of the moment’ memories this year.

The research was commissioned by Magnum, which has launched ‘Pick Your Pleasure Pass’ with singer Troye Sivan, which gives away free event tickets to the public.

Daniel Lythgo, brand manager for the ice cream brand, said: “It’s good to have a bit on spontaneity in your life as it brings a sense of excitement and joy.

“It’s important to celebrate spontaneous moments which is why we’re encouraging people to step out their comfort zone and seize the summer. After all, some of the best memories are made when you least expect them.”

The study also revealed more than half of Brits prefer spontaneous plans over planned events - as they are more exciting. With 45% finding off-the-cuff plans leading to more genuine interactions while 43% enjoy them as they take the stress away from organising.

Going to gigs, eating out and even weekend trips are among the top things people like to do on a whim. But budget limitations (55%), a busy schedule (37%) and childcare (20%, are holding them back.

The OnePoll.com research also revealed that, on average, those who do fun activities at random do so at least four times a month. And 51% are envious of those who can always live in the moment, with summer considered the best time for being more instinctive (71%).

Daniel Lythgo, from Magnum, added: “This summer, we want to inspire everyone to embrace spontaneous pleasure and make the most of every moment.

“We hope to provide opportunities for people to enjoy unique events and create unforgettable memories. Whether it's last-minute tickets to concert or a spur of the moment day out with friends, there's magic in the unplanned.”
