Joe Biden has officially been certified as the next President of the United States, following a tumultuous day at the US Capitol in Washington DC last week. Rioters in support of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, delaying the vote certification process following Mr Biden’s win in the US election last year. Incumbent Vice President, Mike Pence, was tasked with overseeing the certification of all the electoral college votes from America’s 50 states, in alphabetical order.
What role do states play in US elections?
The way American presidential elections work is based on the Electoral College system.
The Electoral College works by calling for the creation of a temporary group of electors every four years.
These electors are appointed by each US state, and the number of electors is equal to the state’s congressional delegation.

Technically when Americans visit the polling station on election day, they are voting for a group of officials who are part of the Electoral College.
For example, the state of California has 55 Electoral College Votes, each represented by an elector, who will then vote for the winning candidate in their state.
In the Electoral College system, there are 538 votes in total, and a presidential candidate needs to secure a 270 vote majority to win the election.
Americans in each US state will vote on election day, and the winning candidate will receive the Electoral College votes for that state.
