Christmas Jumper Day 2018: What is Christmas Jumper Day? Why do we have it?
CHRISTMAS Jumper Day 2018 is fast approaching meaning it’s time to dig out your favourite festive knit - but what is Christmas Jumper Day and why do we celebrate it?
Save The Children: Celebs try the Christmas Jumper Challenge
Thousands of people around the UK will join in this year’s fun fundraiser held on Friday, December 14. You may have already seen the TV advert promoting the day, urging people who don a Christmas woolly top to “please wear responsibility”. The tongue-in-cheek trailer shows a spin teacher sweating uncontrollably in her bulky jumper before falling off her bike. In another scene, a dentist wears a knitted top with a protruding carrot over the face of an alarmed patient.
Various celebrities have already been promoting the cause, including Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton.
Fearne said: “There is nothing I love more than dressing my whole family up in Christmas jumpers.
“I really don’t shy away from over the top novelty designs!
“I love Christmas Jumper Day because it’s so simple to get involved and help raise money for those less fortunate all over the world.”
What is Christmas Jumper Day? Why do we have it?
Christmas Jumper Day is an annual fundraising event organised by international charity Save The Children.
The idea is simple - in exchange for a £2 donation to wear your jumper, you can help children around the world lacking basic amenities in return.
People of all ages are encouraged to sign up - from office workers to school children.
How can you get the Save the Children festive jumpers?
This year Save the Children has launched some simple yet iconic festive designs for the campaign.
The slogan sweatshirts, emblazoned with words such as ‘Joy’, ‘Love’ and ‘Peace’, have been made in collaboration with Selfish Mother.
They cost £55 with 50 percent of the retail price going directly to Save the Children.
Thee stylish knits are being promoted by a host of A-list celebrities including Kate Moss, Liam Payne, David Gandy and Erin O’Connor.
Liam Payne said of his support: "Christmas is all about spending time with the ones you love, and I’m spreading the LOVE this year by buying a jumper from the Selfish Mother collection for Save the Children.”
Save the Children has also partnered with Amazon Fashion to launch The Christmas Jumper Store, with a 20 per cent of net eligible sales on certain fashionwear given to the charity.
Wearers taking part in this year’s fundraiser are also encouraged to spread the love by sharing their design on social media.
