The supermarket giant has recalled the Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Topper Mexican Inspired Lentil Chilli and Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Topper Haricot Beans in a Spicy Tomato Sauce due to health concerns.

It has been found that the items could contain peanuts but they are not mentioned on the label, which is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts.

The Food Standards Agency recommended: "If you have bought the above products and have an allergy to peanuts, do not eat them. Instead return them to the Sainsbury’s store from where they were bought for a full refund."

Sainsbury's issued a statement saying: "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may be at risk if they consume these products.

"If you have purchased one of the affected products with these codes and you suffer from an intolerance to peanuts, please do not eat it. Instead, please return the product to any Sainsbury's store for a full refund or contact the consumer services team at: consumercare@haindaniels.com / 0800 0014409. No other products have been affected by this issue. Sainsbury’s would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Co-op

Supermarket Co-op has issued an urgent warning and recalled its Co-op Smooth Brussels Pate because the product "may contain salmonella and listeria monocytogenes".

The Food Standards Agency explained that symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

"Symptoms caused by listeria monocytogenes can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

"Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems."

The supermarket and food health agency urged customers who have bought the product to return it to their local store and "do not eat it". Shoppers will get a refund or replacement and if they have any questions, they can contact the Co-op Customer Careline on 0800 0686 727.

According to the NHS, Salmonella causes food poisoning and although most people recover without treatment, some could become seriously ill.

The NHS warned: " You usually get salmonella by eating contaminated food. Salmonella bacteria live in the gut of many farm animals and can affect meat, eggs, poultry and milk. Other foods like green vegetables, fruit and shellfish can become contaminated through contact with manure in the soil or sewage in the water. Contamination is also possible if raw and cooked foods are stored together."
