Iceland shopper warns 'Italians will melt down' over new pasta dish – people are divided

Supermarket giant Iceland might ruffle some overseas feathers after revealing its Christmas spin on an Italian classic: Pigs in Blanket Carbonara.

A bizarre new dish has hit the shelves – adding to the carbonara drama.

Last week, Heinz riled Italians after debuting a canned version of the white-sauce dish – which traditonally features egg yolk, parmigiana reggiano cheese, and Guanciale, a type of cured meat.

The food giant says the controversial launch followed research that found younger consumers want food to be fast and convenient, with no cooking skills required.

But now, supermarket giant Iceland has taken the iconic spaghetti recipe and combined it with a British Christmas classic: Pigs in Blankets (aka bacon wrapped around mini sausages).

The unusual ready meal was picked up by popular Instagram account New Food UK, which has amassed more thaan 357,000 followers for sharing the latest supermarket releases.

The Luxury Pigs in Blankets Carbonara quickly sparked fiery debate in the comments section, with one user writing: "Italians will see this and have a meltdown."

Another scathed: "You CANNOT call THAT a Carbonara," while a third added: "Iceland just seem to go out of their way to re-enforce the British stereotype. It's absolutely disgusting."

However, others seemed intrigued by the dish – tagging their friends and flooding the comments with rows of heart-face emojis.

"This looks banging!" one user raved. Another agreed, commenting: "Ooh might have to try this."

A third insisted they needed an 'emergency trip' to Iceland so they could by 'ten' of the meals, while a fourth penned: "That's my Christmas dinner sorted."

At the time of writing, the Pigs in Blanket Carbonara is not yet available to order on Iceland's website – but it has been spotted in stores for under £4 in the frozen section.
