Mechanic urges drivers to listen for certain noise that could lead to a costly repair bill

One of the most popular mechanics on YouTube has warned drivers to get their car inspected by an expert as soon as they hear a certain noise.

Scotty Kilmer, one of the most popular motoring personalities on YouTube, has recommended motorists listen out for a certain noise that could damage their car if no action is taken.

Scotty has been a mechanic for more than 55 years and regularly creates videos in which he tests a range of new and used models, providing advice that can help drivers save money and avoid breakdowns.

In one of his most recent videos, Scotty notes that lags in acceleration and a banging noise whenever the driver changes gear could be a sign that there is an issue with the transmission.

He explained: "Today, I'm going to show you how you can tell if your transmission is starting to go bad. When you start your engine up cold then put it in gear and step on the gas [accelerator] but the vehicle doesn't move, the transmission is starting to go out.

"If you're driving down the road, especially when you're accelerating, and it shifts gears and goes bang, [it's another sign that] the transmission is starting to fail."

Scotty also suggested that owners of automatic vehicles may have transmission issues if the vehicle struggles to change gears, instead revving the engine to incredibly high levels.

The connection between the engine and wheels, ignoring any signs that there is a fault within the transmission system, can lead to a vehicle being unsafe to use or, in extreme cases, inoperable.

Whilst the price varies significantly from model to model, replacing an entire transmission system can cost from £600 to £3,000, meaning it is important to get any faults addressed as soon as they are spotted.

Nevertheless, Scotty noted that hearing these faults does not necessarily mean that they will need to buy new components for their car, urging drivers to check the transmission fluid level.

He advised: "Before you start crying, check the transmission fluid. If it's really low, it can do the same thing but all you need is some new fluid."

Much like engine oil, most engines feature a transmission fluid dipstick under the bonnet, allowing drivers to find how much of the liquid is present.

Taking to the comments section, a number of motorists responded to Scotty's advice with several other causes for the issues.

One viewer wrote: "At least one other person I've seen here noted that a speed sensor might be a potential cause of at least two of those issues."

Another advised: "[If the] transmission has low oil, the first thing to do is find the leak and fix it. There is zero point in adding more ATF [automatic transmission fluid] when it's going to leak out."
