Motorists could be banned from the roads for wearing flip-flops or sandals while behind the wheel as temperatures rise, according to experts.

Specialists at TrackDays.co.uk warned road users caught wearing the summer footwear could “possibly” be issued the ban as well as other punishments due to a simple driving law.

These would include hefty fines as well as up to nine penalty points slapped onto motorists' driving licence.

Despite appearing harmless, wearing loose footwear could be considered against a Highway Code ruling.

This is because there are strict guidelines on wearing loose footwear with sandals and flip-flops flailing under this category.

TrackDays.co.uk said: “Flip-flops or sliders could violate this rule by slipping off, getting stuck under the pedals, or making it hard to brake quickly, potentially causing erratic driving or accidents."

The specialists added: They must offer good grip, not be too heavy, allow free ankle movement, and be narrow enough to prevent pressing two pedals at once.

“If a driver subsequently crashes while wearing flip-flops, they might be charged with "driving without due care and attention," resulting in a £100 fine and three penalty points.

“In court, the fine could reach £5,000, with nine penalty points and possibly a driving ban.”

Rule 97 of the Highway Code states motorists should ensure that “clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”.

The UK has basked in sunny spells throughout the weekend with better weather expected next week.

According to the Met Office, conditions look likely to turn “increasingly warm or even hot” across central, southern and eastern areas.

WeBuyAnyCar has previously claimed incorrect footwear could “jam pedals” in a major safety risk.

A sandal jammed underneath a brake pedal could prevent motorists from stopping the vehicle and put them at risk of causing accidents.

The experts commented: “With summer on the way and the weather improving across the country, more drivers may be switching their footwear from trainers to flip flops.

“However, it’s important to make considered choices with driving shoes as loose footwear can be dangerous as they can slip off and potentially jam pedals.”
