Drivers are at risk of being slapped with a hefty £300 parking fine by DVSA officials for not checking a vital thing when stopping their vehicle.

Jake Smith, director of Absolute Reg, has warned too many drivers were “uncertain of the parking rules” with many at serious risk of being caught out.

It can become a “little tricky" to work out where drivers can and can’t stop with sizeable fines for those getting it wrong.

However, experts stress motorists can learn about parking restrictions quickly by simply reading signs by the side of the road.

Most streets where parking is legal will have a badge explaining the rules which will include when motorists can park in the bay and for how long.

Understanding how these signs work is crucial to avoiding an expensive financial blow this summer.

Jake explained: “The number of different parking signs in the UK can make knowing where to park and for how long a little tricky.

“Having a basic knowledge of some of the most common signs could make the difference between getting slapped with a fine or avoiding one.

“If you’re in a new area and you’re uncertain of the parking rules, look out for and make sure you read the signs and be clear on whether you are authorised to park on the road or on the allocated bays.”

Motorists could be issued a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) by the police, local council or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) for breaking the rules.

FPN charges can range from just £50 to a whopping £300 depending on the severity of the incident.

Road users who don’t pay the charge within 28 days will see the charges increased in a major blow.

However, under some circumstances, motorists could even be prosecuted for not settling a charge when it is issued.

Meanwhile, drivers could also be hit with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) for breaking other parking regulations.

Fines can range from between £50 to £130 which is slightly less than FPN costs but are still sizeable for those on lower budgets.

Jake added that drivers not sure whether they can park in a certain area should think twice about taking the risk.

Jake commented: “If you’re not sure, it’s worth moving elsewhere - a fine for parking is the last thing anyone needs.”
