'I'm a car expert - drivers can get thousands off the price of a new car with this tip'

Whilst the typical price of new cars continues to rise, a YouTuber has shared how motorists can get a considerable discount on their next model.

A popular motoring personality has shared a useful tip that can help new car buyers reduce the cost of the model they are interested in buying.

Jim Starling runs the YouTube channel DefinitelyNotAGuru and regularly creates videos in which he reacts to the latest motoring news and recommends the best new and used models to buy.

In a recent video, Jim discusses how drivers can buy a virtually new car for thousands less by looking at the stock of various dealerships on online retail platforms such as AutoTrader and Carwow. Using this tip, Jim was able to find a new plug-in hybrid Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer for around £15,000 less than the list price.

He explained: "Vauxhall Astra 1.6GS Sports Tourer, a petrol plug-in hybrid all automatic with 180bhp. It's got 10 miles on the clock and costs £29,086 - that's £15,000 off the RRP [recommended retail price] of the car. That's bananas!

"Now, the all-electric range of these is only 35 miles, and that's not amazing, but if you're doing short runs around town, it will serve you well and the rest of the time you can get a little bit more MPG out of it. I can't imagine that they sold too many at the full £41,000 price because there's some fairly stiff competition at that price, but that Astra Estate is a really nice thing to drive."

Whilst deals like these may seem to good to be true, there are a number of reasons why reputable dealerships will advertise a new or nearly new model at a significant discount.

Quite often, these deals are put on examples of cars that have a somewhat undesirable engine, trim level or colour that has proven hard to sell at full price, or was initially sold for full price to a motorist who subsequently cancelled their order.

In some cases, cars with a few hundred miles on them could have been used as demonstrator models, used to give prospective buyers test drives or displayed inside the dealership.

Later in the video, Jim noted that electric car buyers can also get a considerable discount on the recently introduced second-generation Hyundai Kona, a compact crossover that offers plenty of room and a good range.

He added: "This is the Kona with the big battery, the thinking man's EV that does everything you need it to with very little fuss. It's got £5,000 off the RRP, so it should be £39,000 but instead it's pretty much £34,000.

"You get 319 miles of range on this one, plenty of space in it, it's comfortable, easy to live with for an electric car."

Finally, buyers looking to splash out on a new performance model were recommended to look out for discounts on the BMW M4 Competition, with Jim finding an example with a staggering £20,000 off the list price.

He continued: "Now, look at this: the BMW M4 Competition xDrive. It's got 12 miles on the clock, a 2024 model and it has £20,000 off the RRP. This has to be the sexiest BMW on sale right now, I think it's gorgeous.

"I really want one of these, but I'm still about £70,000 short of the asking price, if we're being completely honest here. It's in San Marino Blue as well. If I could have any BMW in any colour and any interior right now it would be this, especially with a £20,000 discount on a £97,000 car."
