Motoring experts have warned that an “epidemic of uninsured drivers” on Britain’s roads was “concerning” with some petrol and diesel road users facing serious price hikes in 2024.

Younger drivers are understood to be most affected with motorists facing car insurance bills worth thousands of pounds to stay behind the wheel.

There are now serious fears from car insurance specialists that rising fees amid a cost of living crisis could force many youngsters to take a risk and not have a valid policy in place.

Recent data from Quotezone revealed there had been a whopping 77 percent rise year-on-year for new drivers.

The stunning increase means teenage cover now stands at over £3,000 per year, more than £2,000 higher than the premiums for older drivers.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, James Armstrong, CEO of car insurance provider Veygo warned the news was a major worry.

He explained: “Driving is fundamental to a young person’s independence, in not only opening up job choices, but also facilitating their social mobility and freedom.

“Because of this, it is vital that we help them to stay on the road in an affordable and safe way.

“These latest figures signalling an ‘epidemic’ of uninsured drivers is concerning and reinforces the need to help young people and their parents know about the more flexible and affordable insurance options available.”

Data from IAmRoadSmart shows the number of uninsured drivers is already starting to creep up.

The number of IN10 endorsements – the code used to label a case of uninsured driving– was up by over a quarter (28 percent) in 2023.

A staggering 6,316 drivers aged between 17 and 20 year-olds were caught last year with another 11,103 individuals between 21 and 24.

However, motorists caught without protection in place could face serious consequences.

Driving without a valid car insurance policy will see motorists hit with a £300 fine and up to six penalty points on a driving licence.

For newly qualified motorists this will be enough to strip them of their licence meaning many will be forced to retake their test.

James added: “Pay-as-you-go insurance is becoming an increasingly attractive choice to overcome the cost of driving - allowing young people to stay on the roads legally without a long-term financial commitment.”
