The Department for Work and Pensions has released the names of the 25 power companies that will be offering a £150 discount on bills to eligible customers. The Warm Home Discount scheme, which targets some of society's most financially vulnerable who require assistance to heat their homes during winter, will begin sending out letters from next month.

Many people will receive the money automatically, however, some recipients will need to provide additional information. A crucial element of the scheme is that the individual's energy company must be a participant; otherwise, the discount will not be available.

Major suppliers have already joined the scheme, including British Gas, E. on, OVO, and Octopus.

The Warm Home Discount Scheme offers a one-off £150 reduction on your electricity bill, with eligible individuals receiving a letter between October 2024 and early January 2025 to inform them of their automatic discount. Some recipients may need to provide additional information and will be instructed to call the helpline by 28 February 2024 for confirmation.

Residents in England and Wales are eligible if they receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or have a low income coupled with high energy costs. Even without the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, eligibility for the Warm Home Discount is possible if, as of a date in August 2024, all the following conditions are met:

- The energy supplier participates in the scheme.

- The individual (or their partner) receives certain means-tested benefits or tax credits.

- The property has a high energy cost score due to its characteristics.

- The individual's name (or their partner's) appears on the electricity bill.

Beneficiaries of benefits like Universal Credit who also incur high energy costs might qualify. Age UK clarifies: "Most eligible households will receive the Warm Home Discount automatically. If you're eligible, you'll receive a letter between November and January telling you about the discount. Then, your electricity supplier will automatically apply the discount to your bill by the end of March."

"If you haven't received a letter by mid-January and you think you're eligible, then you can contact the Warm Home Discount helpline on 0800 030 9322. The deadline for this winter will be announced later in the year."
