Martin Lewis highlights how over-75s can save £169 on TV licences with Pension Credit
Martin Lewis has issued a reminder to state pensioners who are yet to apply for Pension Credit, which can be worth thousands of pounds each year.
Money-saving maestro Martin Lewis has delivered a crucial message to state pensioners: it's time to apply for Pension Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The BBC Sounds and ITV stalwart argues that Pension Credit is not just a benefitit's a "superpower" and a critical "gateway".
Penning his thoughts in the most recent edition of Money Saving Expert newsletter, Martin highlighted the extra perks brought on by the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit: "Pension credit has a superpower... it's a gateway entitlement triggering many other boons. If you're entitled to the Guarantee Credit element, this also entitles you to a host of other state protections."
Pension Credit recipients stand to gain substantially, with potential council tax reductions worth thousands, a gratis TV licence for those aged 75 or over, and eligibility for the Warm Home Discount. Martin elaborated on the coverage extending beyond winter aids: "If you're entitled to the Guarantee Credit element, this also entitles you to a host of other state protections, including - as we've already discussed - the Winter Fuel Payment this winter."
The list continues with an array of financial reliefs and benefits: "Free TV licence for over-75s (worth £169.50/yr). Housing Benefit worth £1,000s for some renters. Council tax reduction. This can be worth £1,000s/yr. Energy bill reductions. This includes £25/wk Cold Weather Payments and the £150 Warm Home Discount."

He also notes that while an annual standard colour TV licence costs £169.50/year, the reality since August 2020 is that the majority of over-75s must now pay for their licences, reports Birmingham Live.
However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. If you're claiming Pension Credit, you're entitled to a free TV licence each year.
To claim, you need to apply for a free licence via the TV Licensing website. If you believe you're eligible but can't apply online, ring the TV Licensing helpline on 0300 790 6117 and request an application form.
The lines are open from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.
