Halifax and Nationwide update as cash machines not working for a week

A person said all the cash machines in the high street were not working.

A frustrated bank customer voiced his frustration as all the cash machines in a town centre were not working for several days.

The man wrote on X about the issue tagging in Halifax and Nationwide Building Society.

He said on August 4: "Once again all ATMs on Redcar high street are out of action. Happening far too often, recently four times in six days.

"Not out of money as screen just go blank. I can only assume this is to force customers to pay by card."

Halifax responded to ask if the cash machines they were referring to in the Yorkshire seaside town were attached to one of their branches or owned by Halifax, and if they had reported the issue previously.

He replied to point out which cash machines he was referring to, saying: "The one at the front of your branch plus the paying in machine inside has also been unreliable.

"Fingers crossed that has been fixed. Funny this all started when the branch reduced its opening times."

Halifax then tried to hone in on what the problem was, asking if there was a message displayed on the screen, if the screen was blank when they approached the machine or if it goes blank after entering their card and trying to make a withdrawal.

The man said there was no message but the screen was completely white after entering their pin number.

Halifax thanked him for the details and said they had reported the issue to the branch.

But the frustrated man then said that none of the cash machines in the area were working including the one at the local Tesco.

Halifax clarified that not all ATMs in the town would be controlled or maintained by the bank.

The man further voiced his frustration at the ongoing problem, saying: " Funny it's not the first time all have failed."

A representative said: "I appreciate this isn't ideal. ATMs will have contact details of the provider on a sticker on the side if this issue persists.

"You are very welcome to withdraw from other branded ATMs, as well as in branch or at a Post Office."

A Nationwide spokesperson told Express.co.uk: "Due to unusually high usage, the ATM outside our Redcar branch is temporarily out of cash, and we are working to resolve that as soon as possible.

"We also have an ATM inside our branch, which is working normally, for anyone wanting to make a cash withdrawal."

Halifax has told Express.co.uk its cash machine in the area is working. A spokesperson said: "According to LINK / Cash Locator, there are 12 other free-to-use ATMs as well as cash at till facilities within a quarter of a mile of our Halifax Redcar branch."
