Banks, airlines and even the London Stock Exchange are suffering a series of technical glitches after Microsoft reported an outage across its online services.

The outages are causing havoc worldwide.

At Brisbane airport in Australia, Sky News broadcasts have been disrupted leading to cancellations on Govia Thameslink Railway's services.

The problems seem to stem from an issue at global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which has acknowledged reports of crashes on Microsoft Windows.

Meanwhile, London Stansted Airport has said “flights are still operating as normal” but that some airline check-in services are being done manually as a result of the IT outage.

A spokesperson said: “Some retail payment machine services have been impacted, and some airline check-in services reverted to being done manually, but our main operational systems are unaffected and flights are still operating as normal."

London Stock Exchange is also facing problems as it is reportedly unable to produce news due to the outages.

A spokesperson said:We are currently experiencing a third party technical issue which is impacting some of our services. There is no impact to securities trading on the London Stock Exchange. We are working on resolving this issue as soon as possible and will continue to provide updates to our customers.”

Train passengers should also disruption due to “widespread IT issues”. Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) – parent company of Southern, Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Great Northern – issued an alert on the brands’ social media channels.

The message stated: “We are currently experiencing widespread IT issues across our entire network. Our IT teams are actively investigating to determine the root cause of the problem. We are unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, leading to potential short-notice cancellations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks.

“Additionally, other key systems, including our real-time customer information platforms, are also affected. We will provide additional updates when we can. In the meantime, please regularly check your journey before you travel.”

Meanwhile, train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) said: “Please be aware that some TPE stations and systems are having IT issues. Please purchase tickets on board if you are unable to do so in stations.”

Microsoft has spoken out about the issues in a statement, writing: "Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions. We still expect that users will continue to see gradual relief as we continue to mitigate the issue."
