WASPI campaigners have hailed their success in gaining support from prospective MPs in the build-up to the General Election on July 4.

WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) chair, Angela Madden, told Express.co.uk: "We’ve had plenty of support so far. We’re asking candidates to hold up a pledge board, put their photo on it and tweet it out from their own account.

"Many have done so from all parties, Lib Dems, independents, Labour. I haven’t seen any Conservatives yet but I expect to.

"And then after the Election, that will enable us to follow up whichever of those candidates have been successful and get them behind the WASPI cause."

Hopes were renewed for the campaign in March, when a long-awaited report came out from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, recommending the women should get payouts of between £1,000 and £2,950.

Several political parties have come out in support of the WASPI cause, with the Liberal Democrats pledging action on the issue in their manifesto this week.

The manifesto states the Lib Dems would "ensure that women born in the 1950s are finally treated fairly and properly compensated".

The Conservative manifesto was more neutral, saying they would look at the Ombudsman report and "provide an appropriate and swift response".

The SNP has previously come out in support of WASPI compensation as well as George Galloway's Workers Party of Britain.

Since the report came out, the campaign had made some progress in Parliament, with a bill setting out how compensation due to have its second reading.

But Parliament has now dissolved for the General Election, meaning these efforts have come to an end - although they could be used as a precedent for later Government action.

Several MPs previously called for payouts for the women, with one MP saying they should get payouts of £10,000 or more.

SNP MP Marion Fellows told Express.co.uk previously: "It is a further stain on UK justice. A WASPI woman dies every 13 minutes.

"After all these years a £10,000 payment is what these women deserve. I have met with them and I have demonstrated with them. Now I want to see immediate action from the Government."
