Martin Lewis discusses credit card payment holidays

Martin Lewis has recommended British holidaymakers to cancel and then rebook their hotels or car hire if they have become cheaper since initially booking.

The Money Saving Expert founder gave the advice on the Martin Lewis Money Show yesterday but warned that it only applies to those with bookings that include free no-fee cancellations.

Mr Lewis said: "Is your hotel or car hire cheaper than when you booked? If so and you've got free cancellation keep checking the prices and if you suddenly find it cheaper rebook and then cancel."

As we enter the holiday season more and more Brits are looking for opportunities to save money while travelling.

This tip from Mr Lewis is aimed at families looking to not break the bank as they head on their summer holidays.

A success story of a Brit using this holiday tip was read out on the show.

The Person said: "In January 2024, I booked a two week car rental in the US for $1,024. After checking comparison sites in May, I checked back and the same car was available for $575.

"I cancelled my first booking, had my deposit refunded and rebooked at a lower price.

"The lesson here is that booking early does not always guarantee the best price."

Martin Lewis responded that "the lesson here is get free cancellation".

For those looking to cut further costs earlier this week Martin Lewis and his team at MoneySavingExpert.com released their top tips for people wanting to protect themselves from going bankrupt from high roaming charges when on holiday abroad.

How to cut your mobile costs and avoid any nasty surprises when you get your post-holiday bill

1. Play it safe and turn roaming off

2. Most providers have automatic spending caps for roaming, but for safety you can also set your own

3. Be aware of your provider's 'fair use' policy – going over the limit could cost you dear

4. Use Wi-Fi wherever possible – plus use free apps to 'call home'

5. Turn off voicemail

6. Get 'beach mobile ready' – download music, films & boarding passes before you go

7. Be extra careful if you're on a cruise or at sea
