Theatre review: Macbeth at the Shakespeare’s Globe
ACCORDING to director Iqbal Khan, the Macbeths had a child, a little boy who haunts the stage like a cross between a silent servant and The Omen’s Damien.
'This is one of the worst productions of Macbeth I’ve ever seen'
It is an intriguing premise but that’s the most interesting aspect of this. With the exception of Ray Fearon as the bewitched, bothered and bewildered thane, this is one of the worst productions of Macbeth I’ve ever seen.
Is this a turkey which I see before me? Some of the acting is, quite frankly, atrocious.
Sam Cox’s Duncan comes across like Strictly Come Dancing’s Len Goodman, skipping across the stage to his doom, while Tara Fitzgerald’s Lady Macbeth is so underpowered she evaporates off the stage.
And the Porter (Nadia Albina) somehow manages to bring Donald Trump and Brexit into her “Knock, knock” speech. The witches are distracted by trendy puppetry and get a bit tangled in billowing material (which serves as Banquo’s ghost) and Jocelyn Pook’s weird hippy music is too saccharine. “Macbeth doth murder sleep” but not half as much as Khan doth murder Macbeth.
