Trailer for the Star Wars prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story
WARNING SPOILERS FOR SOLO AHEAD
The Han Solo prequel featured a few cameos, but nothing could prepare fans for that Star Wars villain return right at the end.
After killing Dryden Vos, Qi’ra reports the news of his death to the real head of Crimson Dawn.
Speaking via hologram the hooded figure was revealed to be none other than Darth Maul.
The renegade Sith Lord was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, but saw his storyline continue in The Clone Wars and Rebels CGI TV series.
There’s a good fourteen years or so gap between those two series for Maul to have been up to all kinds of mischief.
But just who was playing Darth Maul this time around?
Well original actor/stuntman Ray Park, who played Maul’s body in The Phantom Menace, reprised the role after almost 20 years.
However Peter Serafinowicz, who voiced the Sith Lord in Episode I, did not return.
Instead it was Sam Witwer, who plays Maul in The Clone Wars and Rebels TV series. as well as in Star Wars video games.
Similarly last month Avengers Infinity War saw a Marvel villain return, but it wasn’t the original actor.
The Red Skull, who was played by Hugo Weaving in Captain America: The First Avenger, returned as the keeper of the Soul Stone on Vormir.
However it wasn’t Weaving reprising the role but The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand.
The actor is known for his incredible celebrity impressions, so it’s not surprising he was cast to replicate Weaving’s Red Skull.
As to why Weaving didn’t reprise his role remains a mystery, although he has previously said he wouldn’t chose to return.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is out now.
