Blockers review: Prom night comedy with overprotective parents
LAST year I foolishly announced that US comedy writers had exhausted all possible permutations of the “gross out” comedy scene. This was shortly after I’d seen Jada Pinkett Smith projectile urinate from a trapeze in Girls Trip.
Blockers is a comedy from Kay Cannon starring Leslie Mann and John Cena
But I hadn’t accounted for Pitch Perfect writer Kay Cannon. In Blockers she hits on a way to unite two raucous comedy staples in one killer catchphrase.
This is “ass beer!” (obvious when you think of it). She just needed a bent-over ex-wrestler (John Cena), a syphon of beer and an open-mouthed observer (Ike Barinholtz).
Three teenagers (Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon) make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night.
Refreshingly, this is no big deal for the girls. Their parents, however, have a very different take.
